Weekly Baseball Card Hot Sheet

By James Kennedy

Writing has always been a passion of mine.  There’s only 2 things that can irk me when scribing: The first is typing in pain- I messed up my hand pretty good playing hoops today.  The second is writing a big piece, and having it disappear as I add a photo, unable to be recovered.  So I’m keeping it brief to keep my sanity tonight.  Enjoy it though: It’s been a captivating two weeks in the hobby:

1. 2006 Bowman Chrome Jose Bautista Red Refractor /5

2 weeks ago this card sold for a staggering $610.  This week, it rises to almost $1600.  Collectors seem to be finally convinced Bautista is the real deal

2. 2008 Elite Carlos Peguero Autograph /344

This card rose from $20 to $50 in a matter of days.  Peguero had 2 walk-off hits last week and has been flashing the defensive leather in the outfield.

3. 2011 Gypsy Queen Jair Jurrjens Stamp Card /10

Jurrjens, who hasn’t given up more than 2 runs in a start, is the hottest young pitcher in baseball, and the new Atlanta ace.  So what’s with the Gypsy Stamp, which rose 400% ($20 to $80) this week?  First, its numbered to just ten.  Second, Jurrjens doesn’t have many key cards.  And maybe the foreign Dutch stamp adds appeal.  All these factors have sent this card through the roof…

4. 2011 Bowman Jedd Gyorko Autographs

Bowman has only been out a week, and already Gyorko cards have gained significantly across the board.  This may be because he leads the Minors in hitting, and is on the biggest tear of the year.  He topped Baseball America’s Hot Sheet last week after hitting 6 home runs.

5. 2010 Bowman Draft Gary Brown Autographs

Brown is exactly where Mike Trout was in his progression last year.  Brown may be even better.  His Blue autos are up $20 to $65 this week

6. All Trevor Bauer Cards

Every year, it seems one prospect creeps up draft boards.  Bauer entered the year as a projected 3rd rounder in the 2011 Draft; Smart money is currently saying he will probably go #1 overall.  We have featured Bauer several times already this year and it is paying off.  His non-auto’d 2010 Bowman Gold refractor has shot up from $75 to $125 in recent weeks

Player School W L SV ERA FIP IP R ER H HR BB K AVG BABIP WHIP HR/9 BB/9 K/9
Trevor Bauer UCLA 11 2 0 1.37 2.70 118.7 21 18 62 6 33 175 0.151 0.245 0.80 0.46 2.50 13.27

7. 2011 Bowman Baseball

Hobbyists are chasing Bryce Harper cards….and this year Bowman threw Retail a bone- the Michael Pineda retail auto is in high demand.  Cases are up 30%.

8. 2010 Topps Chrome Starlin Castro Autograph

After a 2 week slump, this card trickled down to $15.  It roars back to $30 this week as Castro heats up again.

9. 2005 Topps Chrome Jay Bruce Autograph

Bruce is finally showing why he was the top prospect in the game in 2008 and 2009.  We think there’s plenty of upside here…Bruce cards are in the Dictionary under the words “Beaten Down.”

10. 2009 Bowman Sterling Michael Pineda Refractors

Pineda is almost a lock to win ROY, and has a better-than-average chance, if he keeps this pace up, to win the CY Young Award as well.

11. Alexi Ogando Minor League Cards

With NO MLB licensed cards, collectors are paying up to $30 dollars for minor league cards of the new Texas star hurler.

12. 2010 Bowman Michael Brantley Autographs

Brantley, like Asdrubal Cabrera, have spearheaded the Indians’ hot streak. His Bowman autos are up 20%-50% this week.

13. 2011 Bowman Kyle Russell Autographs

Russell will likely succeed Gyorko atop BA’s weekly rankings this week as he has homered 4 times in 3 games, and is wreaking havoc in the Cal League

14. 2007 Elite Jake Arrieta Auto /949

Arrieta seems destined to follow in teammate’s Zach Britton’s footsteps….his Elite card is the nest to take off….

15. 2005 Bowman Draft Ricky Romero Autograph

Romero is having a breakout year, and despite few sales online for this card lately, it is trending upward, and has plenty of upside left.

Rest In Peace:

Randall Poffo, aka The Macho Man Randy Savage.

Randy, you and Elizabeth captivated me throughout my childhood, and I’ll never forget your match with Rick Steamboat at WM3, your first World Title Win at WM4, and the Mega-Powers feud with Hogan, culminating at WM5.  Thank you.

Oh Yeah.
