Gerrit Cole’s formal professional debut on Monday night reaffirmed his status as one of the Pirates’ top prospects, while dramatizing why the club has such high hopes for its No. 1 Draft pick.
In his first pro appearance outside of the Arizona Fall League, Cole, the Pirates’ No. 2 prospect and MLB.com‘s No. 11 prospect, started for the high Class A Bradenton Marauders at Palm Beach and featured a 97-mph fastball while striking out seven and allowing one hit in four innings.
Cole, the No. 1 choice in last June’s First-Year Player Draft, allowed one run and issued one walk.
Last week, these hit an all time low, selling for an average of $12. They are now at $20-$25 and rising.
4. 2010 Bowman Nolan Arenado Autograph
The AFL MVP this last fall, Arenado is now in the prospect stratosphere. He started 2010 in the back end of most Top 100 prospect lists, and by 2012, he was in most writer’s Top 20. Now, after a hot start, and the need opening up in Colorado, just about no one is more MLB ready and rumored about getting called up more than Arenado. He has a plus plus bat, that in Colorado, gets a third “plus” added to it. Troy Tulowitzki has a monster bat, and I feel Nolan’s is far superior.
Others must share the sentiment, as this card has risen from $25 to a high of $40 in the last few days. I feel like Ryan Braun isn’t a bad comp at this point!
5. 2009 Bowman Draft Chrome Alex Avila (RC) Logo PSA 10
This card is a tough center, but with it being Avila’s lone RC, it sells ungraded for under $8, which makes it hard to believe that this card is nearing $60 as the auction ends tonite. PSA is emerging as the tougher GEM grade in the long-standing BGS/PSA war.
With a walk-off HR against the BoSox, Avila (who hits 6th, but should hit 5th in front of Delmon Young IMO), is coming into his own and making a run at top Catcher in the game. It doesn’t hurt that he’s on the seemingly best team in the Majors this year.
6. 2011 Bowman Platinum Shelby Miller Autograph
Although a second year auto, people realized that the “next Nolan Ryan” {see below} shouldn’t have an auto as cheap as these were going for last week ($5-$7). They’ve doubled since then, while his higher end cards remain steady. Miller tweeted yesterday:
(in my best Daniel Tosh voice) Shelby. I’ve been trying to be the next Brad Pitt for years now. And as much as I tweet it, I’m still barely the best Jamie Kennedy in the sports world. So worry about being Shelby Miller. Now for this week’s WEB BREAKDOWN….hehe.
7. 2005 Bowman Chrome Matthew Matt Kemp Refractor Auto /500
Living up to pre-season hype, Kemp moves from $130 to $180 on the heels of being named NL Player of the Week.
8. 2011 Bowman Draft Matt Barnes Blue Refractor AU /150
A dominant first start makes this future Boston hurler rise from $30-$35 to almost $70.
9. TREVOR BAUER 2011 BOWMAN STERLING AUTOGRAPH AUTO
A dominant Minor Lge debut pushes this card up $10 to $30 per copy.
10. 2011 EEE Adam Conley Auto /784
Highest Percentage Gainer!
Highest Debut HS Apperance!
Two hot starts for the 2nd rounder for Miami sends these overnight sensations from $1 and under to $10 and rising!
11. 2008 Sweet Spot Sigs AJ Griffin Auto /230 USA
After 2 crazy starts (11 IP, 16K, 2 BB, 0.36 WHIP, no ER) this card, as well as his 2010 EEE surge big time. Thi particular card moves 500% from $3 to $15.
