I agree Josh, the Heat did look unbeatable at times when they don't get caught up in the officiating and the Bulls mind games. I think its going to make for a great series, I expect the Heat to win it all.. I sure hope KD gets his one day, and doesnt turn into a Karl Malone type... Great article.

Josh,
As someone who in recent history has not been able to afford either but has been collecting for many years, I see it as this. Collectors and the hobby as a whole are very quick to annoint a product as the king . NT was annointed as such many years ago. At the time it was. It is a great product and the earlier products were better than recent stuff. Topps on the other hand was always known for lower end stuff that was found in every storre even was I was a kid way back in the 80's. It's reputation for better or worse was cemented as the common mans cards. Every kid could buy them and we were happy back then to get them. I do not claim to be a marketing expert but Panini is going to do everything to push it s product and feed off the demand of the hobby. If the collectors are willing to buy based on name only then expect them to keep pumping it out at ridiculous prices. Until the collectors stop buying it it will remain a very top dollar product even though in some opinions the product suffers from past years.
Ask UD what happens when the quailty suffers. IF NT continues on the path it is now I would guess in time it wont be thought of as the king, but perception far outweighs reality in the short term.
I also like the look of the Five Star over NT this year.

I honestly think that Topps shot themselves in the foot in 2 ways. 1st) Topps completely overcharged for Valor with them trying to push the price above $180 per box upon release only to have it settle between $125-130 a box today, only 3 months after most paid more than $175 per box. 2nd) Last year's 5 Star is terrible and it will take some time before people forget that. Between these 2 factors, I think that the 1st one is the main reason because to me, 5 Star this year looks similar to Valor....both dark and have that gladiator feel to them so why pay $450 for a box when you can get a similar designed card for $125-130 a box?

I do not agree that 5 Star looks better than NT. Although there is a lot of white on NT, there is a simple elegance to their RPAs and book cards and this to me makes NT what they are. The 2 Andrew Luck 5 Star cards that you posted (book and patch auto card) do look nice but here is another way to look at it. With the prices being fairly similar in price per box (less than $100 difference as of today), why pay $31k for a fully loaded Toyota or Honda when you can pay $35k for a BMW or Mercedes? Before you judge, I have a Toyota myself but it is much closer to the $22k model than the $31k one :) I think the price difference is too small for people to select 5 Star over NT.

I agree with loving the cards. I feel the designs of the Five Star are terrific, probably my favorite card design out of all this years football products. I also like the National Treasures, but would pick the Five Star design over it any day!
