Random Thoughts 1/14/14

-I watched the Golden Globes on Sunday night and I was pleased with the movie results.  I was very happy that Jared Leto and Matthew McConaughey both won.  They were very deserving.  If you haven’t seen it, I definitely recommend it.  American Hustle and 12 Years A Slave winning did not surprise me.  Both films were excellent and had great casts.  I was rooting for Gravity to win more, but at least it got the director nod.  It was my favorite movie of the year.  I can’t speak for the TV awards because I don’t watch a lot of TV.  I was a bit surprised to see Brooklyn Nine-Nine win as much as it did.  I’ve never seen it, but it was going up against some heavy hitters in Big Bang Theory, Modern Family and Parks and Recreation.

-Speaking of movies, I went and saw Her on Saturday.  It was a fascinating movie.  Most movies that are futuristic seem really far-fetched to me.  This one seemed eerily close to what could happen in 10-15 years.  The movie has some vulgar language, but if you can get past that, I recommend it.  The video game is truly awesome.

-The Conference Championship Games are upon us in the NFL.  Brady/Manning match-ups never get old.  That one should be another classic.  However, I believe that the Super Bowl champ is whoever wins the NFC.  Both Seattle and San Fran play stout defense and have explosive QBs.  The AFC will certainly have the more experienced QB, but I just think that SF and SEA are too tough for DEN and NE.  I definitely don’t see Seattle losing if they are able to beat SF this weekend.

-Spring Training is only about a month away.  I am very excited about the upcoming season.  Some of you may already know this, but I am a huge Cubs’ fan.  These are exciting times for Cubs’ fans because of the young talent.  This year might be a bit rough for them, but the future is very bright.  Kris Bryant, Javier Baez, Jorge Soler, Albert Almora are all top prospects.  In addition to that, they have several international players like Eloy Jimenez and Gleyber Torres who could turn into stars.  There are a ton of great young players in baseball right now.  I can’t wait for some of their MLB debuts this year.

-This is a slow week for releases.  However, it’s a great opportunity to go back and get products you may have missed.  It’s also a great time to start saving up for pre-orders.  The end of last year was a bit rough on pre-orders, but this year has been much stronger so far.  I expect that some of these early Topps BB products will perform quite well.  I’m also looking forward to the higher end releases in FB and BK from both Topps and Panini.
