HOT SHEET BONUS SUPPLEMENTAL, Weekend Edition May 6-8

“Cards to look out for at shows this weekend”

With developments in the baseball world changing by the minute, we supplement this week’s hot sheet with 5 more cards to watch!  With readers heading to the shows this weekend, we highlight 5 more “must have” cards that aren’t in high supply!

 

1.     2008 Danny Duffy Donruss Threads Auto /499 

 

Once a $1-$2 card, Duffy sometimes gets lost among the dearth of KC’s many prospects.  Don’t sleep on Duffy: His lone auto, #d to just 499, is a bargain at $20 (if you can find a copy).  He projects as a #3 in THIS system….in most systems he’d be a frontline starter in the future, as he is tearing up the minors.  From BA.com: 

Omaha has one of the best assemblages of prospect talent you’ll ever see, but that didn’t inoculate them against a slow start. Two weeks into the season, Omaha was 4-7 and several of the prospects, most notably Mike Moustakas, were struggling.

Fortunes can change quickly in baseball. Now, the Storm Chasers are working on a nine-game winning streak, and Thursday night was a great example of how they are getting it done. Duffy allowed only one hit while Moustakas homered twice and Eric Hosmer homered as well.

Duffy didn’t have any problems with a slow start—he’s working on a 15-inning scoreless streak, and he’s sporting an excellent 24-to-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

“He didn’t command his offspeed very well tonight,” Omaha manager Mike Jirschele told the Omaha World-Herald after his start Thursday night. “He threw enough for strikes, and when you’re throwing 94 to 96 (mph), it helps. He mixed his pitches well and for the most part kept the ball down in the zone.”

2.     2006/07 Topps AFLAC PROMO Eric Hosmer Cards

 

 
 
Called up last night, possibly ahead of schedule, Hosmer’s average of .450 in AAA forced the Royals’ hand.  While he has no pro cards (his Razor and USA auto’s are considered “minor league” or “non-MLBPA licensed”), this card may come to the forefront, as it was put out by Topps for their AFLAC series.  So why haven’t we seen buybacks and all kinds of buzz on a Hosmer AFLAC?  Simple.  He never got past this “promo” stage because of a 3-year, exclusive autograph deal with Razor Entertainment.  Hosmer WAS at the game, and may have signed some of these in-person.  They are few and far between, and we generally don’t advise buying in-person autos for AFLACs, but in this case, we would make an exception if the auto looked good.
3.     2008 Threads Josh Tomlin Auto Rookie /875
 
 
The parallel to 100 is shown above, but the base auto /875 is just as in-demand, as the Indians’ hot start has been fueled by not just Justin Masterson, but the undefeated Tomlin.  This Threads set was made to play out exactly as it is:  They included lesser known names to pay off in the future.  And the future is now.
4.     All 2010 Robbie Erlin Autographs
Erlin, who led the Minors in ERA last year, has been shockingly overlooked in the hobby.  This year’s fast start has changed that to some degree:

In 14 innings this week, Erlin gave up just 3 hits total, while walking 1 and striking out 16.  The time is now to invest in this Texas Rangers’ future top of the rotation starter.

 

5.  Brett Wallace Autograph Cards

Wallace has been red-hot in the majors this year, after being traded 4 times in his young career.  he has finally found a home in Houston, where his BA has hovered around .370 the last few weeks.  His profile remains low because he does play for Houston, but this will only last so long.

 

CARDS TO KEEP AN EYE ON:

A) 2010 BOWMAN DRAFT MATT HARVEY AUTOGRAPHS-  After a blistering start, Harvey had an off-start, but rebounded this week another 1 hitter

B) 2007 BOWMAN CHROME DELLIN BETANCES AUTOGRAPHS-  He was slowed by a blister, which sidelined him for 3 weeks, but in 2 starts this week, limited to 75 pitches per start, he gave up just 1 run on a solo homer and struck out 10.  Its only a matter of time before these blow up.

C) 2008 BOWMAN CHROME BRAD PEACOCK REFRACTORS-  Gold refractors at just $12, he is a perfect bargain buy as he threw a 2-hitter this week.  He is rapidly gaining prospect status

D) 2010 ELITE MATT MOORE AUTOGRAPHS-  These cards had trailed off in price (from $25 to $12) earlier in the year, but the reigning strikeout king in the minors has returned to the $25 price level, as he is pitching very well as of late.

E) ALL BRANDON BELT CARDS-  They took a dive after his MLB stint went bad, but has been red hot since the demotion to AAA.

F) 2010 ELITE JEDD GYORKO AUTOGRAPHS /675-  from BA.com:  This week: .407/.515/.704 (11-for-27), 2 HR, 2 2B, 6 RBIs, 6 R, 6 BB, 2 SO
Playing every other day at third base, Gyorko has thrived as the Storm’s No. 3 hitter, leading the club with five homers, 24 RBIs, 17 walks and a 1.098 OPS. (He shifts to DH on days Edinson Rincon plays the hot corner.) A middle infielder in college, Gyorko has endure typical growing pains at third base, committing four errors in 14 games. But with a .326 average and .400 on-base percentage through 96 pro games, he clearly has a feel for hitting that could carry him to Double-A before the year is through.

G) 2010 BOWMAN GRANT GREEN AUTOGRAPHS- an 11 game hit streak after a poor start

H) 2009 ELITE TELVIN NASH AUTOGRAPHS- overlooked 2009 3rd round pick.

So, there isn’t a whole lot going on the sports world right now.  The Super Bowl blog will be done later in the week.  Other than that, there isn’t a lot going on.  I figured I’d take the time to post some of my all-time favorite cards.  I am including pictures which will be direct links to eBay if you want to take a look at them.  Feel free to post comments with some of your favorite cards.

For me it all started with the 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr. RC.  A beautiful card and one of the first centerpieces to my collection.

I absolutely loved the first year of SP Authentic FB with the Autograph Patches.  I have loved these cards ever since they came out, but the first year still holds a special place in my heart.  Sadly, there aren’t any on eBay right now, but I did find some completed ones.

I’ve always loved the Pull-Out Autograph Jersey Cards from Donruss/Panini.  They are not super easy to display, but they have huge, bold autographs and I have always liked them.

I’ve also always liked the Certified Mirror Gold Autographs with the four pieces of memorabilia and an autograph.  These cards often have some very cool patches and they are pretty rare as well.  The multi-piece cards have always been cool to me.

Nickname autographs have always been some of my favorite cards.  So many of them don’t sign their nicknames very often.  I’ve always wished that Jordan would sign “Air,” but I don’t think that is ever going to happen at this point.

Now, this next card is not one that many of us could ever own.  That doesn’t stop it from being one of my all-time favorite cards.  A beautiful design and a truly amazing card.  This card needs no introduction.

Jumbo Patches are always some of the better looking cards.  I have never been picky about which set they came from.  I just like the huge, multi-colored patches.

The next one is just one of my favorite cards.  It’s not a real valuable or rare card.  It’s just one that I liked because I liked the player and he doesn’t have a ton of Rookie year stuff.

This next card was one that I loved as a kid.  It was a super rare card as I remembered.  Now they aren’t worth nearly as much as they were when I had one.  Just a very cool looking insert.

This last one has special meaning to.  I made the checklist for this product while working at Upper Deck and I specifically made this card so I could try and buy one.  Sorry for the lousy picture, but I couldn’t find a good picture.
